Lexington City Schools is at the forefront of technological innovation in education, equipping students with tools and experiences that prepare them for the future. As the district continues to celebrate the success of its 1:1 iPad initiative, which ensures every student has personal access to technology, it also highlights two cutting-edge STEM facilities: the Jacket Innovation Lab at Lexington Middle School and the SparkLab at Lexington Senior High School. These advanced learning spaces give students hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies, fostering a passion for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

1:1 iPad Program: A Foundation for Digital Learning
Since its launch, Lexington City Schools’ 1:1 iPad program has provided every student, from elementary through high school, with a personal digital device to support learning. Through interactive lessons, collaboration, and creative projects, students are using iPads to connect classroom concepts to real-world applications.

Dr. Nakia Hardy, Superintendent of Lexington City Schools, remarked, “Our 1:1 iPad initiative provides a solid foundation in digital literacy, empowering students to innovate and lead in a technology-driven world. Whether pursuing higher education, entering the workforce, or serving our country, our students are equipped to thrive.”

Terrie Holshouser, Director of Technology, added, “As part of our district’s 1:1 Apple iPad Initiative, we are proud to ensure that every student has access to the technology they need to succeed. Through our collaboration with Apple Inc., we’re equipping students with powerful tools that enhance learning, foster creativity, and support seamless collaboration between students and teachers. This initiative empowers our students to explore new ideas and engage in a modern, connected learning environment that prepares them for the future.”

Jacket Innovation Lab: Hands-On Learning at Lexington Middle School

Opened in February 2023, the Jacket Innovation Lab at Lexington Middle School is now entering its second year as a hub of student exploration and creativity. The state-of-the-art facility allows students to work with advanced technologies, including drones, robotic arms, and AI-powered tools. Hands-on projects—such as programming drones or designing smart cities—turn classroom concepts into real-world solutions, giving students critical problem-solving skills they need for future careers.

SparkLab: Advancing STEM at Lexington Senior High School
The SparkLab at Lexington Senior High School builds on the district’s commitment to expanding STEM opportunities. Now in its second year, SparkLab offers students hands-on experience with AI, coding, and sustainable technologies, preparing them for post-secondary education and future high-tech careers. In partnership with SparkNC, and thanks to a recent $2.25 million, 3-year commitment from The Leon Levine Foundation, SparkNC will continue to grow while enhancing the 17 SparkLabs across North Carolina, including our very own SparkLab here in Lexington City Schools. This ensures that our innovative learning space will continue to provide students with a unique way to experience school for years to come.

The SparkLab is also home to the Student Ambassador Program, where students take on leadership roles by mentoring peers, promoting the program, and engaging with the community. This initiative helps students develop leadership and communication skills, giving them an edge as they look toward their future careers.

Terrie Holshouser, Director of Technology, shared the district’s vision for the labs:  “The Jacket Innovation Lab and SparkLab provide our students with unprecedented access to technologies that will shape their futures. Through our partnership with SparkNC, we’re equipping them with the skills needed to lead in a rapidly evolving world. Not only do these labs provide essential tools, but they are also part of today’s generation of students’ everyday life. It’s fun, creative, and exciting—exactly what’s needed to engage and inspire students to reach their full potential in this tech-driven era.”

Strategic Plan Alignment: A Vision for Future-Ready Students

These efforts align with Lexington City Schools’ 2024-2029 Strategic Plan, which prioritizes career readiness and preparing students for life after graduation. By integrating advanced technologies and offering hands-on learning experiences, the district ensures that students gain the skills they need to succeed in college, careers, and beyond.

Community and Business Support

The success of these STEM programs is bolstered by partnerships with local businesses like Nucor, which contributed to equipping the Jacket Innovation Lab with cutting-edge tools and technologies. Additionally, EGGER, a leading manufacturer of wood-based materials, is committed to fostering talent and shaping future professionals through innovative training programs. We are excited to partner with organizations and educational institutions to prepare students for pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship programs. These initiatives aim to provide hands-on experience, valuable skills, and a pathway to a rewarding career. Together, we can create opportunities that equip our students for success and build a brighter future for our Lexington community. This partnership ensures that Lexington students are prepared to pursue high-paying, in-demand careers in industries such as technology and engineering.
