New images of the iPhone SE 4 have been shared by Japanese blog Macotakara, corroborating a design similar to that of the iPhone 14. As expected, these mockups show a device almost identical to the iPhone of 2022, and even compatible with the iPhone 14 cases. However, there is also mentioned a “Plus” size option, which is very interesting. But it’s a safe bet that this isn’t what Apple planned.
An air of déjà vu
Our Japanese colleague regularly shares models of future iPhones, giving us a glimpse of what awaits us before the officialization. This year’s mockups, from a prop maker, feature a single rear camera, a notch with Face ID, and a mute switch instead of the new action button. The dimensions correspond exactly to those of the iPhone 14: 146.7 mm x 71.5 mm x 7.8 mm. The iPhone 14’s soft silicone cases fit well, although the camera cutout is too large due to the single lens on the SE 4 versus the standard iPhone 14’s dual camera.
All this therefore confirms that the Cupertino company plans to reuse the chassis as well as most of the components for its next fourth generation SE. The biggest novelty will therefore be the OLED screen instead of the good old LCD. This will then be the end of the home button across the board.
An iPhone SE 4 Plus?
Interestingly, the asian blog mentions a possible larger version, similar in size to the iPhone 14 Plus. However, there have been no prior reports of a larger iPhone SE 4, and this is unlikely to come to fruition. Apple is not changing its plans a few weeks before a launch, even for an entry-level model. And given the mixed success of the Plus models in recent years, we don’t see Apple taking such risks.
Macotakara notes that the final design and size are not yet decided, but it is more likely that we will only see one standard size at launch.
A model that can be a hit
Whether or not there is a larger version, the iPhone SE 4 is expected to launch next spring with a 6.1-inch OLED display, the A18 chip with support for Apple Intelligence and AAA games, and a single 48 MP rear camera similar to that of the iPhone 15. It should also be the first device to integrate the 5G modem developed by Apple. All for around €500, which could make it a bestseller.
Too bad it won’t be available before Christmas.
