Apple’s 2025 iPad may use its own Wi-Fi chip
Besides its own 5G modem, Apple is also believed to be deploying its own Wi-Fi chip as early as next year.
According to DigiTimes, sources within Apple’s supply chain claim that the in-house Wi-Fi chip could appear in some 2025 iPad models. If it misses the 2025 timeline, DigiTimes speculates that the Wi-Fi chip may arrive on some iPhone 18 models in 2026.
The iPhone maker started plans to design its own wireless chips in 2021 when it posted job positions for people with experience in modem and wireless chips.
Bloomberg reported in January 2023 that Apple aims to ditch a key Broadcom component in 2025. Broadcom currently supplies a combined component that manages Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, radio frequency chips, and other wireless charging components to Apple.
Apple’s ultimate goal is reportedly to integrate the 5G modem, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth functions into a single “connectivity chip”.
However, it’s unclear if such an arrangement would give customers any benefit, though it will certainly reduce Apple’s reliance on Broadcom. Perhaps it could also free up precious circuit board real estate for other components and features, like a larger battery.
Development of the Wi-Fi chip is said to have paused for an unknown period last year as the company prioritised resources on the development of 3nm chips.
