HOUSTON – The Texans are signing former starting center Scott Quessenberry and tight end Irv Smith Jr., to their practice squad following a successful tryout, per league sources.
Starting center Juice Scruggs, who missed the Sunday night win over the Chicago Bears due to a groin injury, is on track to return this week, per league sources.
Quessenberry started for the Texans two seasons ago when Justin Britt stepped away from football for personal reasons.
He tore his anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament last August and was placed on injured reserve, missing the entire season.
Quessenberry, 29, is a former Los Angeles Chargers fifth-round draft pick from UCLA and the brother of former Texans offensive lineman David Quessenberry, an inspirational cancer survivor.
A former All-Pac-12 selection, Quessenberry (6-foot-3, 310) has started 26 of 79 career games, including a career-high 16 starts in 2022 for the Texana.
Smith is a former Minnesota Vikings second-round draft pick from Alabama who has also played for the Cincinnati Bengals and Kansas City CHiefs.
Smith (6-2, 240) was a second-team All-Southeastern Conference selection for the Crimson Tide and won a national championship.
He has 109 career receptions in the NFL for 973 yards and 10 touchdowns.
He caught 18 passes for 115 yards and one touchdown last season in 12 games for the Bengals on 26 targets.
He caught a career-high 36 passes for 311 yards as a rookie for the Vikings. He had a career-high 365 yards and five touchdowns in 2020 for Minnesota.
