While all of the attention right now is on the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro as their launch gets ever closer, the iOS 18 update brings plenty of new features to older models.
Yet more features will ship with iOS 18.1 in October, including support for spatial photos, a feature that is now available to owners of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Spatial photos are effectively 3D photos similar to spatial videos that can be viewed on the Apple Vision Pro.
The new visionOS 2 software update for the Apple Vision Pro also allows people to create spatial photos from any photo that they have saved in their library, but this new feature means those photos can be taken in spatial form right off the bat.
Record spatial photos and videos with remarkable depth for viewing in the Photos app on Apple Vision Pro. For best results, keep iPhone in landscape orientation and stable while recording. Video is recorded at 30 fps at 1080p. A minute of spatial video is approximately 130 MB. A spatial photo is approximately 5 MB.
The iOS 18.1 software update is currently in developer beta and is expected to be released in October. Apple confirmed the launch timeframe when it announced the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro earlier this month. The same update will also include support for Apple Intelligence.
