What Needs To Be Done To Mitigate The Impact Of Airport Climate Protests?
Yesterday, Frankfurt Airport’s operations were thrown off course after protestors cut the fence and glued themselves to operational areas of the airport, creating a safety risk for aircraft. We have seen many such protests in the last few years, and it doesn’t look like they will stop overnight. Harsh penalties are already being sought to deter such actions, but there have also been calls for greater airport security at German Airports. Flying back to Frankfurt yesterday, I saw the fallout firsthand. My aircraft landed late at 23:15, and I saw many people sleeping wherever they could and signs to a makeshift camp. What do you think the solution to mitigate the impact of some protests are? (Photo: Fraport)
Is It Just Difficult Terrain That Causes So Many AIr Crashes In Nepal?
This week, another tragic air crash in Nepal claimed the lives of 18 people. Since 2000, more than 360 lives have been lost in accidents involving airplanes or helicopters, but why? According to a 2023 safety report by the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), 93% of deaths in air accidents have involved collision with terrain or another object. Nepal has many mountains and a number of airports that use ‘tabletop’ runways, with sheer drops at one or both ends. However, it’s not only the terrain that causes challenges for aircraft operators in the country. An aging fleet means aircraft aren’t always equipped with the safety technology of modern airliners, and in the past, crew training has been brought into question – Nepalese airlines have been banned from entering EU airspace due to their poor safety record. What do you think is the root cause of air accidents in Nepal?
Why Is Hong Kong Still Playing Catch-Up With Post-COVID Recovery?
Hong Kong had the transit market in the palm of its hands before the rise of COVID-19. However, it has struggled to catch up with the likes of Singapore Changi in this post-pandemic market. Cathay Pacific and its sister airline HK Express are at 73% recovery compared with 2019. A new international environment and the late relaxation of travel restrictions have contributed to this slow return. Still, what else is causing these challenges? Let us know below!
Which Region Will See The Most Aviation Growth This Decade?
Several aviation markets are back in growth mode following a period of recovery after the pandemic downturn. While the likes of the North America and Europe have long enjoyed a consistent uptick in aviation activity over the decades, there is strong growth potential in the likes of Africa, India, and Asia-Pacific. Going by statements made from Boeing, which said that Southeast Asia will need to quadruple its fleet over the next 20 years to meet demand, I feel this market be one of the top contenders. Which region do you think will grow the most this decade? Let us know what you think below!
What Does The UK’s New Labour Government Mean For Aviation?
Earlier this month, Labour achieved a landslide victory in the UK General Election, displacing the Conservatives as the ruling party in emphatic fashion. This new government will likely herald considerable change for the UK in various sectors, and aviation is no exception. Put concisely, Labour’s aviation policy in its manifesto placed particular emphasis on airspace modernization and the promotion and development of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). As such, under the new government, the UK can expect steps to be made when it comes to air traffic management (which could optimise flight routes), as well as the incentivization that is needed to get SAF rolled out on a wider scale. What expectations do you have of Labour when it comes to aviation? Let us know in the comments!
What Does The Future Of In-Flight WiFi Look Like?
Just today, LOT Polish Airlines announced a deal to add Viasat Internet to 15 of its Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. In-flight WiFi can still be very hit and miss between carriers, but also between aircraft of the same carrier. Take Lufthansa for example, it is rolling out free messaging across its A320 fleet, yet the past two flights dit not have this capability. Meanwhile, airBaltic is looking to launch free super fast WiFi on its Airbus A220s using SpaceX’s Star Link system later this year. I personally can’t wait to see this, and will it will take a long time to become the standard, I believe that one day it will. What about you though? What do you think is the future of in-flight WiFi?
