SOCIETY Apple at the start of the 2012 summer holidays, it is shutting down the MobileMe web service, leaving users with no choice but to switch to iCloud. The company’s suite of online services and software Apple subscription-based, launched in 2008, it included features like Find My iPhone, MobileMe photo gallery, chat facility, online calendar, storage and other cloud services.

After four years of the service faltering rather than running smoothly, the Cupertino company has finally decided to shut it down, giving MobileMe users until the end of July to remove their data from the service.

MobileMe: the failed predecessor of the company’s iCloud service Apple

The failed predecessor of the company’s iCloud service Apple was the first attempt to operate a prepaid cloud service. Unlike today’s monthly offers he set Apple the price of MobileMe service to $99 as a one-time payment for an individual plan or $149 for a family plan. Cupertino also offered top-up options for those who wanted to add storage. The MobileMe service was part of the company’s then-CEO’s “digital hub” strategy Apple Steve Jobs, who introduced this strategy soon after his return to Apple in the late 90s. Apple had been experimenting with subscription-based Internet services for Mac users since the early 2000s. MobileMe extended those efforts to iPhone and iPod touch owners, while redesigning the service for the OS X operating system.

It sounded absolutely great on paper. In practice, however, MobileMe never lived up to its promise. As early as August 4, 2008, just one month after its launch, Jobs apologized for its failed launch. “It was a mistake to launch MobileMe at the same time as iPhone 3G, iPhone 2.0 software and the App Store,” Jobs wrote in an email to employees. Behind the scenes, Jobs was furious about the MobileMe debacle. According to an article in Fortune magazine, he gathered responsible employees in an Apple auditorium and asked them: “Can someone tell me what MobileMe is supposed to do?”. When some people started stuttering answers, Jobs stopped them: “Then why the hell isn’t he doing it?” In his email to Apple employees, he promised to make MobileMe “a service we’ll all be proud of,” but that never happened. He stopped in 2011 Apple MobileMe advertise to new customers. iCloud replaced MobileMe in October of that year. MobileMe’s demise in July wasn’t a surprise, but it marked the end of one of Jobs’ few missteps.
