WESTPORT — Police say a witness who saw a masked person driving an Aston Martin and tracking devices on a cellphone and Airpods led them to a Connecticut “chop shop” and the suspects who followed a couple home before a violent carjacking, an arrest warrant shows.
Police have arrested Derrick McGill, who they say was renting the Berlin home where the cars were found, and a Waterbury teen in the Sept. 17 carjacking that was captured on a Westport family’s garage Ring camera.
Giovanni Lopez, 16, was initially charged as a juvenile with first-degree strangulation, robbery by carjacking, first-degree burglary, first-degree criminal attempt to commit first-degree larceny of a motor vehicle and third-degree assault in the Westport incident. He was also charged with first-degree larceny of a motor vehicle and illegal taking of a payment card related to the theft of a BMW the day before the carjacking, police said.
Lopez is now also charged as an adult with home invasion, a class A felony under state law, in the carjacking.
The status of the original charges is unclear since juvenile records are sealed from public view.
The warrant for Lopez’s arrest shows police used Airpods left in the BMW and a cellphone in the Aston Martin to help track the vehicles. But it was a call from a woman that led police to the “chop shop” in Berlin, where the stolen cars and others were found, according to the warrant for Lopez’s arrest.
The witness told police her son was driving on Berlin Turnpike the afternoon of the Aston Martin carjacking when he saw the car turn into the driveway of a tan stucco home on Orchard Road, the warrant stated.
Police said the series of events began on Sept. 16 when a car owner reported his black 2021 BMW 530xi was stolen when he went inside a restaurant to pick up food, leaving behind his key fob, the warrant stated. He tracked the car using the BMW app to the area of Exit 46 on Route 15 North before the tracker was apparently removed from the car, according to the warrant. The owner was also able to track his Airpods to Waterbury, where he was notified they were removed from their case, the warrant stated.
On Sept. 17, a Bayberry Lane resident in Westport reported he’d been assaulted in his garage and his Aston Martin DBS Superleggera convertible had been taken, the warrant stated. The car was tracked heading east on the Post Road toward Fairfield, according to the warrant.
Responding officers did not find the car, but Westport Police Chief Foti Koskinas saw a blue BMW 541 getting onto the northbound side of Interstate 95. The driver of the BMW then attempted to elude officers by getting on and off the highway, according to the warrant. Fleeing at a “high rate of speed,” it was last seen going north on Route 8, the warrant said.
The owner of the Aston Martin told investigators his wife had driven them home in the car after they went to lunch in Norwalk. The man said they didn’t notice anyone following them, the warrant stated. The warrant does not say why police believe they were followed.
The couple pulled into the home’s attached four-car garage, where he got into the driver’s seat to fix the car’s Apple CarPlay, the warrant stated.
In an incident captured on a Ring camera in the garage, two people wearing masks then entered the garage and forcibly pulled the man from the car. During the encounter, one of the carjackers attempted to steal another vehicle in the garage, the warrant noted, but the keys were not inside.
During the assault, one of the carjackers “put his hand into a pocket and intimated that he had some type of weapon,” the warrant said. The second suspect, seen in the video wearing a sweatshirt with writing on it, is believed to be Lopez, according to the warrant.
The warrant claims Lopez put the homeowner in a “chokehold” after he called out for his wife to call the police, the warrant said. The homeowner later told police that the assailant had jammed his hand in his hoodie and threatened, “I will use this to (expletive) you up,” the warrant stated. Lopez punched the man in the face several times before the other carjacker began backing the car out of the garage, the warrant stated.
The homeowner told police he was rammed by the door of the car during the struggle and was choked and punched repeatedly, causing him to start “to get faint,” the warrant stated.
Once the car was out of the garage, the struggle ended and the suspects fled, the warrant stated.
Police were able to track the car as far as Bridgeport using the wife’s iPhone, which was left inside the Aston Martin, the warrant stated.
Norwalk police later notified Westport investigators that the blue BMW was reported stolen in Rowayton. That car and the black BMW reported stolen on Sept. 16 were later picked up traveling together by license plate readers in Naugatuck, according to the warrant.
On the morning of Sept. 18, a woman called the Westport police detective bureau and reported that her son saw the Aston Martin the day before in Berlin, the warrant stated.
Her son saw the car turn into a “tan stucco home with a pond in the back” on Orchard Road in Berlin, the woman told police, according to the warrant. He then saw the driver get out wearing a ski mask, “which he thought was odd,” the warrant stated. The witness also noted that the Aston Martin was with a dark BMW, the warrant stated.
Police went to the house, where they found two BMWs parked in the driveway, both with swapped plates, according to the warrant. One matched the black car stolen in Westport the day before the carjacking, the warrant stated.
Police obtained a search warrant for the home, where they found the stolen Aston Martin in the garage, the arrest warrant said. The black BMW was also confirmed to be the one stolen in Westport on Sept. 16, the warrant said.
Authorities also arrested McGill, who lived at the home, charging him with four counts of first-degree larceny of a motor vehicle, operating a chop shop, conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny and conspiracy to illegal operation of a chop shop.
In an interview with Hearst Connecticut Media Group last week after he was freed on bond, McGill, 39, said he wasn’t involved in the carjacking and claimed police “got the wrong guy.”
The warrant said Westport police honed in on Lopez in the carjacking after a Waterbury police lieutenant advised them he was “possibly a suspect” in the carjacking. The lieutenant told investigators they were “actively investigating” Lopez in another case and had his phone number.
Data from Lopez’s phone placed the device within 800 feet of the restaurant where the BMW was stolen on Sept. 16, according to the warrant. It was also located within 200 feet of where the BMW was stolen in Rowayton on Sept. 17 and in the driveway of the Bayberry Lane home where the Aston Martin carjacking occurred later that afternoon, the warrant said. The phone was also “pinged” by a tower of the Orchard Road home in Berlin on the evening of Sept. 17, the warrant stated.
Lopez declined to speak with investigators, the warrant stated. A search of his home found clothing “that appeared to be an exact match to what Lopez was wearing” during the carjacking on Bayberry Lane, the warrant said. Police also seized a handgun with an extended magazine, the department said in a news release announcing the arrests.
The warrant said police also observed “cuts on Lopez’s right knuckles that are consistent with injuries from throwing a punch.”
Court records show Lopez remains in custody on $500,000 bond in the home invasion case. He is next due to appear in court on Nov. 8.
