JULIE HYMAN: Here are three things you need to know this morning. August CPI rising 3.7% from a year earlier. That’s an acceleration from 3.2% in July. And it marks the second straight rise after 12 consecutive declines in the annual rate. The reading adds to the debate over the next move from the Federal Reserve, a pause at this month’s meeting is baked in, and one more hike still sits on the table. The big question, when is it done? When is the official– the tightening cycle officially run its course? And when do the cuts start?

Apple’s big launch was met with a whimper from investors, but new features, including an action button still giving tech fans something to cheer. Debate will swirl over whether Tim Cook’s company has done enough to persuade Apple fans to upgrade. A series of issues, though, still hang over the tech giant. China today finally responding to reports of an iPhone shutout, flagging, quote, “security incidents” with the devices, but saying it has not issued a ban. Meanwhile, France has ordered Apple to halt iPhone 12 sales due to what it says are high radiation levels.

And a strike that will have a ripple effect across the US economy is nearing. The Union of Auto Workers is still trying to reach tentative contracts with General Motors Ford and Stellantis. Negotiations are expected to continue up until the deadline of 11:59 PM Thursday. Reuters now reporting the UAW could strike at targeted auto plants if a deal on new contracts with the so-called Detroit 3 is not reached. A strike plan is expected to be released this evening, any form of coordinated action would be unprecedented for the big three automakers.
