#PrimeDay #BlackFriday

Apple offers a trademark impressive blend of elegant design and user-friendly features in its devices, from the new iPhone 16 to the powerful iPad Pro and the editor-favorite MacBook Pro. While these are among the best when it comes to seamless integration between hardware and software, they’re not exactly cheap. But with some planning and patience, you can snag an Apple device at a discount, as we typically see its gadgets go on sale at certain times of the year. For instance, during Prime Big Deal Days earlier this month, the just-released Apple Watch Series 10 was already $25 off.
For the best value on Apple products, it’s a good idea to wait until Prime Day or Black Friday. These events generally offer the best discounts on everything from the AirPods, iPads, Apple Watches, and MacBooks, sometimes saving you hundreds of dollars. Yeah, you can find more modest deals — between 5-10% off — throughout the year. But the significant deals of 10-25% off (or more) typically occur during those major “shopping holidays” and after new product releases. Here’s how you can best go about saving on new and old Apple gear.
Shop Older Apple Products (After the Latest Releases)
Apple has a fairly predictable annual release schedule. For instance, for the past ten years, Apple has released new iPhone and Apple Watch models at the beginning of fall. If you’re in the market for a new smartphone, this is the perfect time to take advantage of carrier promotions, which can subsidize the cost of a new iPhone by hundreds of dollars. For instance, AT&T is offering the iPhone 16 Pro for as low as $0 per month if you meet the right criteria, like if you have a suitable device to trade in and are enrolled in the provider’s unlimited plan.
More importantly, the release of new Apple products generally results in retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart dropping the price of older models. A few years ago, I saved $400 on a MacBook Pro with M1 chip after Apple introduced upgraded models. Even though the configuration I got was by then a year old, the laptop has held up admirably for work and play, proving that the average user doesn’t always need the latest and greatest.
If you don’t mind skipping out on a few new features, this strategy of waiting for the piggyback sales that follow the annual debuts is solid. New Apple releases, particularly Apple Watches and laptops, are typically iterative, so you don’t miss out on much by being a generation (or two) behind. Pretty much anything in Apple’s product lineup that’s 12-24 months old, including Macs, iPad Pros, and iPhones, should hold up for several years despite being “outdated.”
Wait For Prime Day and Black Friday
We’ve been covering Prime Day and Black Friday for years, and we’ve found that these events consistently feature the best deals on both new and old Apple products. During this fall’s Prime Big Deal Days, for example, Amazon dropped the price of the AirPods Max by 27%, while the MacBook Air with M3 chip was a couple hundred dollars off. We also spotted discounts on the AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) and the iPad Mini (6th Generation).
Last year during Black Friday, the Apple Watch Series 9, which at the time was only a few months old, was already discounted to $329 — a $70 drop. We saw even steeper sales on the older Apple Watch Series 8, AirPods, and iPad, including the iPad Mini and iPad Pro. It’s not uncommon to also find savings on the iMac, Studio Display, and Apple accessories, including wall chargers, EarPods, and cables.
Be on the Lookout for Smaller Discounts Throughout the Year
While you can typically find the best savings on Apple products during major events and shortly after new product releases, there are smaller sales throughout the year. The price of the AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) have been hovering around $189 at Amazon all year, though we saw them as cheap as $168 during Prime Day over the summer. If you were to buy them directly from Apple, you’d pay $249.
Similar deals occasionally crop up at various times, which we try to highlight in our weekly coverage of the best sales and deals.
Speaking of, discounts directly through the Apple Store are rare, though students can save via its Education Store portal. You can also trade in your older Apple devices for credit toward a new purchase. However, the trade-in value depends on the older device’s model and condition.
Apple Products to Check Out
As luck would have it, we’re coming up on another of those deal windows right now. Apple introduced the iPhone 16 Series, Apple Watch Series 10 Series, and the AirPods 4 with active noise cancelation last month. These devices represent the latest in the brand’s lineup of premium devices, with new features powered by AI, a Camera Control button in the iPhone, and a 30% larger screen in the Apple Watch. If you didn’t catch them on sale during Prime Big Deal Days, there’s a good chance you can find them when Black Friday kicks off at the end of November.
