Apple secretly partnered with Chinese automaker BYD to develop advanced battery technology for its now-cancelled electric vehicle project, according to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The collaboration, which began around 2017, focused on creating a long-range, safer battery system using lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells.
The partnership, previously undisclosed, sheds light on the extent of Apple’s efforts in its decade-long pursuit of producing an electric vehicle.Despite investing approximately $1 billion annually on the project, codenamed “Titan,” Apple ultimately abandoned its car ambitions in February 2024.
While Apple doesn’t own the technology used in BYD’s current Blade batteries, the joint effort reportedly informed the development of BYD’s battery pack design. The Cupertino-based tech giant contributed expertise in advanced battery packs and heat management, while BYD provided manufacturing know-how and advancements in LFP cell technology.
The collaboration was led by Alexander Hitzinger on Apple’s side, with Mujeeb Ijaz overseeing a team of about 50 battery engineers. Michael He, vice president of BYD’s battery business, served as the counterpart for the Chinese automaker.
Although Apple eventually moved away from the BYD partnership and explored systems from other battery makers, the project yielded valuable insights. These advancements have reportedly contributed to the development of other Apple products, including the Vision Pro headset and the Neural Engine AI processor.
BYD has since leveraged its Blade battery technology to become a major player in the electric vehicle market, briefly surpassing Tesla as the world’s top EV seller. The company’s sales grew from 179,054 vehicles in 2020 to 3 million in 2023, establishing it as China’s largest automaker by sales.
