Apple is preparing to launch a second-generation AirTag next year, according to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman.
In his weekly Power On newsletter, Gurman reports that starting in 2025, Apple will release several new updates, including M4 versions of the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air, an upgraded iPhone SE, refreshed 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Air models, and a second-generation AirTag. However, specifics regarding the new item tracker have not been disclosed.
Earlier this year, Gurman first reported on Apple’s plans for a new AirTag, indicating that the company had begun trial manufacturing runs with partners in Asia. The upcoming AirTag is expected to feature improved location tracking and a new Apple-designed U-series chip for enhanced Precision Finding.
In January, Gurman noted that Apple retail store back rooms and Apple device storage warehouses were still full to the brim with AirTags, which contributed to the postponement of the new version’s launch until 2025.
Apple launched the original AirTag in 2021. The small tracking device helps users locate their belongings by using Bluetooth and Apple’s Find My network. Users can attach the AirTag to items like keys or bags and track their location using the Find My app on their Apple devices, including iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
