HBO has released the first full trailer for The Last of Us Season 2.
Building on a short teaser shown in August, the new trailer offers a closer look at the mysterious new character played by Toronto’s own Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek), who appears to be conducting some sort of interview with Joel (a returning Pedro Pascal). We also get our first official look at Abby (Booksmart‘s Kaitlyn Dever), a soldier who has a close connection to Joel and Ellie’s (Bella Ramsey) stories. (Fans of The Last of Us Part II video game upon which Season 2 is based will know more, but we’re being spoiler-free for those who haven’t played it.)
Beyond that, we get shots of Ellie’s friend and love interest, Dina (Alien: Romulus‘ Isabela Merced), Joel’s brother Tommy (a returning Gabriel Luna), Ellie and Dina’s friend Jesse (Beef‘s Young Mazino) and militia leader Issac (Westworld‘s Jeffrey Wright, reprising his role from The Last of Us Part II). It’s also worth noting that the second season was shot in and around Vancouver (versus Alberta for its predecessor), and some of B.C.’s beautiful landscapes can be seen in the trailer.
The trailer concludes with a vague 2025 release window, reiterating previous statements from HBO. In a recent Deadline interview, HBO boss Casey Bloys said the sophomore season is targeting a premiere in “the first half” of the year. It’s the first of at least two planned seasons to fully adapt The Last of Us Part II. The series streams on Crave in Canada.
The Season 2 trailer was released for “The Last of Us Day,” which falls on September 26th every year to coincide with the in-universe day on which the Cordyceps virus outbreak occurred. As part of those celebrations, PlayStation has also added The Last of Us Part I, a remake of the original The Last of Us, to the PS Plus Extra and Premium catalogues.
