A group of Welsh athletes taking part in a European Ironman competition landed in Italy to find that their bags had been left behind in London. The group of nine from Bridgend’s Dragon Tri flew with British Airways to Bologna airport from Heathrow’s Terminal Five but their bags that contained specialised equipment for the competition didn’t.
They were then involved in a race against time to locate their bags and get them to Italy in time for the competition on Saturday.
The event in Italy’s Emilia Romagna region involves a 3.8km swim, a 180km cycle, and a 42.2km run. The Welsh competitors have been training for nearly a year for the event.

But the entrants whose bags didn’t arrive were concerned they might not be able to take part without the right equipment. Alica Thomas said: “We left Bridgend at 9am on Thursday all excited after months of training and preparation. We travelled from Heathrow’s Terminal Five and actually remarked about how relaxed it was because it was after the school holidays and we had absolutely no concerns that there would be any issues with our bags. The plane was only about two-thirds full as well.
“Our bikes had been sent out to Italy ahead of us but we had our wetsuits, our cycling shoes and helmets, and all the nutrition needed packed in our bags. We got to Bologna and thought it was strange that our bags were taking so long and then another passenger came over and said that he had an AirTag in his bag and it was showing as still being at Terminal Five.”
She said there was only one person at the airport logging the lost bags and claimed more than 30 people on the flight didn’t have their bags delivered. “It was taking ages and because of all the bad weather and rain in Italy caused by Storm Boris we were told that the car hire companies were closing.,” she said. “Luckily one person in our group was able to go out and meet the person organising our transfer and persuaded him to wait for us.”
The group claimed when they managed to get hold of someone from BA they were told that their bags could be collected from the airport, which is a three-hour round trip away, on Friday or it could be delivered to them between two and three days which would be too late for the competition.
“The type of equipment in our bags is specialised and not something you can pick up from the local shop,” said Alica. “Some of the group went back to the airport on Friday morning and it was absolute chaos. Trying to fill out forms and get the bags in time. It was a total race against time to get them and get back to register for the competition. It has been been so stressful and not the way we had planned to prepare for such an important competition.”
British Airways has been contacted for a comment. They replied with a link to the missing bag form that passengers can fill in but haven’t commented further.
