CHEROKEE COUNTY, Kan. (KOAM) — The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a new email scam.
According to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, the scammers are emailing residences Google Street View photos of a house in attempt to make the victim believe the scammer had been by the residence or make the victim believe they know where they live.
Warning signs from the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office:
- Unsolicited email from an address you don’t recognize or appears to be system generated
- Threatens an action unless payment is made
- Required payment by Bitcoin
- Prohibits the victim from contacting others, including authorities
Some online safety tip reminders include:
- Being cautious with emails from unknown senders
- Keep your security and firewall systems current
- Don’t click on links contained within emails from unknown senders
- Regularly change your password and ensure it’s sufficient
