Apple’s new M3 chips are causing quite the storm right now but there’s bad news for anyone who was hoping that one major limitation would be fixed. Because it very much isn’t.

That limitation affected the M1 and M2 chips before it and now it’s clear that the M3 is also in the same situation — users can only connect a single external display if their Mac has that particular chip inside.

That’s been confirmed by the M3 chip’s display support on the 14-inch MacBook Pro, with Apple’s notes saying that a single external display with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz is supported. However, as MacRumors notes, there is a way around that if you’re willing to use DisplayLink adapters.

This limitation has existed since the first Apple silicon Macs with the M1 chip were released in 2020, but users can connect multiple external displays to M1, M2, and M3 Macs with DisplayLink adapters as an unofficial workaround.

It’s worth remembering that this limitation only affects Macs that have a display built in, like the 14-inch MacBook Pros, 13- and 15-inch MacBook Airs (when updated to the M3), and the iMac. The Mac mini will presumably still support two displays once that gets its own M3 refresh. When that will be isn’t yet clear, however.

As for those with M3 Pro chips, they can support up to two external displays while the M3 Max can support up to four.
